Pittsburgh’s AI Avenue: A Global Model for the Future of Innovation and Job Creation

Pittsburgh is on the cusp of something transformative—a chance to lead the new AI economy in a way that not only drives technological innovation but also creates thousands of jobs and improves the quality of life for our communities. As the leader of the AI Avenue Working Group (AIWG), I’ve seen firsthand the incredible potential that AI holds for our city. This is not just about new tech for tech’s sake—it’s about harnessing the power of AI to solve real human problems, create opportunities, and position Pittsburgh as a global leader in AI.

Our work with AI Avenue, a one-mile stretch of Penn Avenue in East Liberty, brings together some of the brightest minds in AI—many of whom are already reshaping industries and changing lives. This corridor, anchored by Duolingo’s headquarters and Google Pittsburgh’s offices at Bakery Square, is home to over 21 emerging AI companies. It’s more than just a location; it’s the heart of a movement. These companies, led by world-class AI innovators, are tackling challenges that matter—whether it’s improving healthcare, bridging education gaps, or making our communities safer.

But AI Avenue isn’t just a place for tech companies to thrive—it’s a vision for how technology can integrate with community life. Imagine AI-enhanced public safety measures that keep our streets safer, traffic management systems that make commuting easier, and public spaces that use AI to create a more vibrant, connected urban experience. This corridor has the potential to become a 'center of gravity' for human-first AI development—a place where AI innovation and community well-being go hand in hand.

Of course, no vision comes without its challenges. For Pittsburgh to fully realize its AI potential, we need to make significant investments in both physical and technological infrastructure. The basics—like upgraded sidewalks, better lighting, and improved streetscaping—are critical to making AI Avenue a welcoming place for everyone. But beyond that, the technological infrastructure must be robust. Access to competitively-priced “compute”—the data processing power necessary for running complex AI models—will be a key differentiator in attracting and retaining top AI talent.

One of the most exciting aspects of AI Avenue is the potential for job creation. AI will not only generate new industries but also revitalize traditional ones. That’s why we envision an AI workforce development hub along the corridor, connecting Pittsburgh’s youth and adults with the training they need to excel in the AI economy. Educational partnerships with local schools, universities, and workforce agencies will ensure that Pittsburgh’s talent pipeline is strong and ready to meet the demands of this growing industry. We’re talking about opportunities for everyone—from high school students learning to code, to mid-career professionals upskilling in AI, to entrepreneurs starting AI-driven companies.

Building trust with the community is just as important as building the infrastructure. We need to ensure that the benefits of AI are shared across all neighborhoods and demographics. This means engaging with residents, addressing concerns about technology, and showing how AI can be a force for good—improving safety, health, education, and economic prosperity.

AI Avenue represents a bold, achievable vision that integrates technological innovation with human-centered development. It stands to become a global model for the new AI economy. The potential for job creation alone is immense. Pittsburgh has the talent, the resources, and the determination to become a global leader in AI. But to get there, we need strategic investments and public-private partnerships that fuel this growth. Together, we can transform AI Avenue into a global hub for AI innovation while raising the profile of the entire Pittsburgh innovation ecosystem—from Hazelwood Green to Robot Row.

At the AI Horizons Summit this week, we’ll be talking about the next steps to make this vision a reality. With coordinated leadership and strong partnerships, we have the opportunity to set a new standard for how AI and community development can work together. The future of Pittsburgh is bright, and AI is the engine that will drive us forward. Let’s embrace this moment and lead the way.
